I’ll make it short, japanese language is not a problem for your Japan travel! 🙂
Japan is indeed a very far-off country (at least from my home in Italy), but the distance is not only physical but also cultural. This is probably why I fell in love with it – its unique way of life, so vibrant and colorful. However, the language barrier adds another layer of distance.
Despite the presence of English signs and instructions in major cities and train stations, most Japanese people struggled to speak even basic English during my first trip to Japan in 2006. And this remains true, even as of my last trip in November 2023. So, what you might have heard is accurate: most Japanese people will likely not understand your English, no matter how carefully you pronounce or speak slowly.

But there is good news. The Japanese people are incredibly friendly and helpful towards foreigners. They will go out of their way to assist you, even if it means communicating in a mix of gestures, pointing, and broken English.
So, yes, with some effort and patience, Japanese people will eventually understand what you need or want, and they will do their best to provide you with the information you seek.
To ease the communication burden, I suggest adopting a fun approach: familiarize yourself with some commonly used Japanese words or phrases.
This will significantly improve the clarity of your requests and save you time. After that, they will probably answer you in Japanese, but the brief moment of awkwardness will be outweighed by the assistance you receive.
Here are some common Japanese words/phrases that might help you:
- Hello – こんにちは [kon’nichiwa]
- Goodbye – さようなら [sayounara]
- Good morning – おはようございます [ohayou gozaimasu]
- Good evening – こんばんは [konban wa]
- Please – お願いします [onegaishimasu] or ください [kudasai]
- Thank you – ありがとうございます [arigatō gozaimasu]
- Excuse me/sorry – すみません [sumimasen]
- Cheers – かんぱい [kanpai]
- I humbly receive – いただきます [itadakimasu]
- Yes – はい [hai]
- No – いいえ [iie]
- How are you? – おげんきですか [ogenki desu ka]
- The bill, please – お会計お願いします [Okaikei onegaishimasu]
- Help – 助けて [Tasukete]
And here are a couple of key sentences to make communication faster. Most of the time, you will need to know “Where” something is, “How Much” something costs, and a few other essentials. I’ve got you covered:
- How Much – いくら ですか [ikura desu ka]
- Where is it – どこ ですか [doko desu ka]
- I don’t understand – わかりません [wakarimasen]
- I’ll take it – それをもらいます [Sore o moraimasu]
