If you are wondering how to get an internet connection in Japan, the good news is that there are plenty of ways from best pocket WiFi to eSIM solutions, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. I suggest to cover this part of your next trip to Japan before departure.

Now let’s discover together the most popular options, listed worst to best:

Roaming in Japan

Roaming in Japan is expensive. Roaming in general is expensive, and it feels like a practice from the early mobile phone era. I’m not sure why anyone would want to connect to the internet via roaming in 2023. However, it’s important to check with your provider to see what the rates are.

Free public Wi-Fi

There are a number of free public Wi-Fi networks available in Japan. However, these networks can be slow and unreliable, and they’re not always secure. If you’re planning on using free public Wi-Fi, it’s important to be aware of the risks and take steps to protect your data.

Japan Pocket Wi-Fi

Japan Pocket WiFi (also called Wi-Fi Router, Personal Wi-Fi, Hotspot etc.) is a portable device that allows you to connect multiple devices to the internet. It’s a good option if you’re traveling with a group.

I personally used this solution in 2014 while traveling with a friend. Having the chance to connect two devices with just one device was indeed convenient. However, there are some drawbacks: you need to recharge it (and when you’re in Japan, you already have plenty of devices to take care of); it’s more cumbersome and expensive than a SIM card; and it can run out of battery life.

Check out some recommended Pocket Wi-Fi:

Japanese SIM card

This is a more affordable option than roaming, and it gives you more control over your data usage. You can buy a local SIM card at most airports and convenience stores in Japan. I used a Japanese SIM card back in 2017 during one of my travels in Japan, and I was quite happy with it. There are several options to buy a Japanese SIM card, and I had mine shipped directly to the first hotel I was staying at, so when I arrived, the card was there waiting for me. Cool!

It is a better solution than a pocket Wi-Fi if you’re traveling alone. But if you’re in a group, you’ll probably prefer a pocket Wi-Fi, as multiple people can connect to it. You just need “one device to connect them all”.

eSIM Japanese Cards

It’s 2024, and technology has taken over with the creation of eSIMs. What is an eSIM?

It’s a virtual SIM card that you can install in your phone and let it connect you to the internet at the cost of the plan you paid for. It’s easy to install, configure, and use. It’s convenient, and you don’t need a dual-sim phone to make it work. You only need a phone compatible with the eSIM feature. The process is very easy and quick.

Here are my top recommendation of eSim plans from reliable providers.

Airalo, is one of the best product and the one I personally use for my Japan trips, It comes in different plans with differen traffic, duration and prices options:

7 days – 1gb traffic
15 days – 2gb traffic
30 days – 3gb traffic
30 days – 5gb traffic
30 days – 10gb traffic
30 days – 20gb traffic

Sakura Mobile is another reliable eSim japanese provider. I recommend browse their amazing eSim Japan website page to learn more about plans and pricing. I highly recommend it.

eSim Japan is another recommend provider which, among the others Japan related services, offers interesting eSIM plans and more. Click on the image below to go to their website and see with your eyes what they have to offer:

eSIM installation process:

The process is really straightforward (at least with Airalo, but I bet it is also with other providers):

  1. Download the eSIM provider App
  2. Buy one of the SIMs plan
  3. Activate the eSIM (usually 1 day before you take off since it need an internet connection. But dont’ worry! eSIM will start its period only when it hooks to the net of the destination country)
  4. Done!

Personally I think eSim is the way to go for an internet connection in Japan and you? Let me know if you have any doubts and what if your favorite solution to get an internet connection on the go in Japan.
